PUR Binding

PUR and Perfect Binding - The PURfect combination! Find out why here...

About PUR Binding

PUR Adhesive Binding glue is erfect for applications where two hands might be busy, cooking, computer inputting, sewing, etc.You are probably quite familiar with Perfect Binding, with a glue process that utilizes Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA). This glue works well for approximately 80% of bound books. But what about the other 20% of books that cannot be properly bound with EVA? These books might be more suited to PUR Binding, a process utilizing Polyurethane Reactive Glue (PUR). At Wrap-Ups, Inc., we can help you choose the process that is right for your needs and we have the specialized equipment required when PUR Binding is the best choice.

PUR Binding Is Tough!

The main limiting factors that challenge adhesion are stiffer substrates and heavier ink. For this reason, at Wrap-Ups, we generally prefer to use PUR Binding when faced with the task of binding heavier weight paper such as 100# coated book, cover stocks, plastics or pages with heavy ink coverage. PUR Binding will enable your books to hold up to repeated usage and retain the original binding strength for the life of the book.

PUR Binding Can Take The Heat!

Another factor to consider when selecting the binding process is the application for the book. What environment will the book be regularly exposed to? PUR Binding differs greatly in its chemistry from other glues - once applied and cooled down, it will never melt again. For this very reason it makes great sense for any books that will be used in difficult environments such as automobiles, boats or maybe even pool-side.

PUR Binding Bites! ... Into Substrates For Better Binding

PUR Binding bonds itself more securely to substrates due to a molecular change that occurs once it is exposed to normal air and humidity. It does this by biting into the substrates and securing the adhesion. For comparison consider the difference between standard school glue and "Super Glue." School glue has its applications, but certainly would not be an appropriate choice to fix a broken vase.

PUR Binding Remains Flexible

PUR Binding glue allows books lie flat on a table, without springing closed on the user.

One final advantage of PUR Binding glue is its inherent flexibility. PUR Binding is applied in a thinner film than traditional glue which allows books to open more freely and remain more flexible. During usage the spine actually "gives", absorbing the stress of turning pages. In comparison, EVA is more brittle after application which translates into more stress at the binding edge of the paper and glue. This is typically the cause of failure in books with heavy usage where pages begin to fall out.
