Paste Binding – Post Press in the Bindery
Post Press Paste Binding of spines on 8 page and 12 page booklets creates the need to “Hold-Out” inks and coatings in the gutter. If this is not done properly, the glue will not have the opportunity to penetrate into the fibers of the paper, and can create scenarios where the internal pages might pull free from the spine of the booklet.
Coatings - Aqueous and Varnish Coatings should be held out in the gutter for a total of 1/4” on the flat layout. This will create enough margins on both sides of the fold for glue.
Inks - If ink coverage is solid in the gutter, and images bleed into this area, Wrap-Ups recommends to hold out this area as well, but a less amount. 3/16” total on the flat image area will suffice, which creates 3/32” area on both sides after the fold for the glue to do its job.
If ink coverage is light, and consists mainly of a screen or such, you may bleed this entirely into the gutter.
Center spreads of booklets have no glue; consequently no hold-out is necessary.
Please contact your representative at Wrap-Ups should you need any further clarification.
