Spine Glue - Every book we adhesive bind receives
two different types of glue. The basic spine gets an adhesive
for binding the edges of the individual leaves to the cover, known
as the backbone. This area always has all inks and coating held
out for adhesion purposes, and the amount of holdout should equal
the "bulking" of stock you have selected for your paper
dummy.
Side Glue - This glue's characteristics equate
to a "Higher Tack" Pressure Sensitive Glue. We apply
this glue from the edge of the backbone up to the score for the
hinge on the front and back of the book. On the first and last
page of any bound book, and inside the cover, the distance from
the spine to the edge of the printed image needs to be held out,
or masked off. This will allow for the side glue to adhere the
cover to the first and last pages of the book. The distance of
holdout will vary according to the binding process used.

We have determined less of a holdout for the ink than the height
of the hinge score for a reason. If your book was planned to have
the exact amount of "holdout" as the thickness of the
hinge, and the book bulked out differently during the run, you
would have a problem. The result would be white area peeking out
along side the hinge score. We plan this as a "Trap",
to ensure the image bleeds properly underneath the hinge.
Holding out the entire coating for the height of the hinge is
crucial for the actual adhesion of glue. Do Not Alter This!
